Using stable isotope to study N fixation and N cycling in ecosystems

Type de manifestation : Journée scientifique

Description :

The workshop on “using stable isotope to study N fixation and N cycling in ecosystems” aims at addressing the state of the art concerning the methodology and models used to estimate nitrogen fixation and nitrogen cycling, both at plant and ecosystem levels. Stable isotopes are valuable nonradioactive tracers for understanding resource acquisition by a plant or by microbes, resource allocation within a plant, among different organs or functions, resource use in a given metabolic pathway, or resource partitioning among plants in a community or between plants and other organisms. Stable isotopes are used as in situ tracers at both natural abundance and in labelling experiments and allow quantifying transfer rates, residence time and the fate in the plant and the ecosystem.

The workshop takes place in the frame of a bilateral cooperation project that we are running with Brazilian partners from Sao Paulo University (USP-COFECUB project “Introducing nitrogen fixing species in forest plantation: effects on growth and processes”).
The major part of the workshop will be devoted to discussion but to fulfil the discussion, 10 participants will be invited to propose a short communication (20 minutes) highlighting hot spots of their ongoing work in this field. Advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches and recommendations on how to analyse such experiments will be a central point
to the discussion. Invited participants are asked to confirm their participation as soon as possible and to send an abstract not later than June 25th. The meeting is open to teams active in those and in related fields who might be willing to participate to a network for exchanging scientific and technical knowledge. Poster contributions are encouraged. A large time will be devoted to poster presentation and discussion.
